His health is poor, and he is aware this will probably be his last birthday. As the sketch develops, he realizes no one is coming, so he begins to place some of his expensive possessions in the place of his guests. A knock at the door causes his expectations to soar until he discovers it is the delivery person with the cake he ordered. The elderly man tries to convince the delivery person to stay, offering money. The delivery person humors the old man at first but becomes uncomfortable and leaves despite the man's objections and his offer of extravagent amounts of money.
