Women clergy celebrated
Indianapolis, Indiana
Tuesday, July 30, 2013
More than 200 Nazarene clergywomen and supporters gathered for fellowship, inspiration, and the celebration of women called to ordained ministry at a special breakfast hosted by Global Clergy Development and the Nazarene Women Clergy Council, USA/Canada, in conjunction with the Church of the Nazarene's General Assembly and Conventions.
Council Chair C. Jeanne Serrão opened the June 23 breakfast by reflecting on the theme from the Song of Solomon, "Arise My Beloved," which reminded attendees of God's call and faithfulness to walk with believers through the journey of fulfilling a call to lifetime ministry.
Three women were honored for their lives of grace, inspiration, and ministry in their own unique contexts. Bessie Chambo of Maputo, Mozambique, Alice Piggee-Wallack, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Phyllis Perkins-Howard of Nampa, Idaho, were each presented an award for "Leading the Way" through their lifetime of service and inspiration to future generations of women called to teach and preach the gospel.
Each award recipient had insight and inspiration for the group. Chambo called for prayer for global revival. Piggee-Wallack's challenge was for attendees to see people, not problems. At the conclusion of her video, Perkins-Howard quoted Nazarene clergywoman Fairy Chism: "If you let Him, God will choose only the best for you."
The program high point was a liturgy written for the special occasion by Keith Schwanz and Libby Tedder Hugus. The liturgy, directed by Hugus, led into the event's traditional time of anointing and prayer. East Ohio Co-district Superintendent Carla Sunberg concluded the program with a benediction.
